Preventing Common Employee Management Problems

Whether you have a small staff of just a few employees or you’re in charge of managing the managers, leading employees can be fraught with difficulties. To manage effectively, you need a combination of tools, from people skills to the right business management software. Don’t let employee management issues get in the way of how you do business. Here are some common management problems and what you can do to avoid them.

Problem: Employees don’t recognize your authority.

This problem occurs in all kinds of companies, but for small businesses, it can be particularly common. Typically, this situation results when the lines between employer and employees is blurred in some way, which can make employees overstep their bounds, even inadvertently.

You can avoid this problem by clearly marking the hierarchy in your business and adhering to it. Collaborate with your employees but own your position as a decision maker. Many companies have policies about that discourage managers and employees from socializing outside of work events. In small companies, this may not be practical. Some businesses don’t want that kind of culture and want to encourage cooperation through building these relationships. However, even in a social environment, respect the lines between yourself and your employees so that those boundaries remain clear in the workplace.

Problem: Employees have conflicts with each other.

Disagreements in the workplace are natural, but ongoing conflicts between employees are usually more about management issues than interpersonal issues. Employees eventually become resentful of leaders who don’t address these problems.

If you’re aware of a conflict between employees, confront the issue head-on fairly and directly. Listen to each party’s side and work to find a compromise solution that makes everyone feel valued and respected. When employees know that their manager is proactively engaged in this way and treats all team members fairly, they’ll be happier and more productive in their jobs.

Problem: Employees don’t get regular performance feedback.

Employees benefit from having clearly developed expectations and clear benchmarks by which their work will be judged. For busy managers, tracking all of these expectations and providing feedback can be challenging.
